The anointing of the sick is administered to bring spiritual and even physical strength during an illness, especially near the time of death. It is most likely one of the last sacraments one will receive. A sacrament is an outward sign established by Jesus Christ to confer inward grace. If you or a loved one is in need of the Sacrament of the Sick, please let your caregiver know you are Catholic. You do not need to wait until death is near to receive this sacrament. Any member of the faithful can receive this sacrament as soon as he or she begins to be dangerously ill or has reached old age. The faithful can receive the sacrament several times if their illness becomes worse or another serious sickness afflicts them.
